Professor in environmental planning at Department of Development and Planning, AAU. His work is centered around environmental assessment and environmental governance with a specific interest in biodiversity and nature protection as well as water management. • Dr. Martin Lehman


Martin Lehmann, PhD, is assistant professor at the Department of Development & Planning, Aalborg University, in the field of sustainable regional development and environmental management. His research interests include cleaner production, institutional & organisational change, and innovation systems; in particular their (inter-)relations to sustainable development and networks & partnerships. He is focusing his research on industrialised as well as developing countries, especially Thailand, where he has long first hand working experience.

• Dr. Søren Løkke


Søren Løkke is Associate Professor at the Department of Development and Planning at Aalborg University. PhD. He work with analysis of  political processes and environmental, chemical and ecotoxicological problems. Environmental management, life cycle assessment and carbon footprint methods takes centre stage in the most resent activities. He is chair of the Environmental Management Steering Committee at Aalborg University.

He is lecturer of the institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics. Dr. Ahlf is an expert in the field of ecotoxicology.



• Dr. -Ing. Joachim Behrendt


He is chief engineer in the department Wastwater Management and Water Protection. His lectures have a focus on biological and chemical waste water treatment.



• Prof. Wolfgang Calmano


He is coordinator of the JEMES programme and a professor in the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics. His research deals with environmental chemistry, analytical speciation methods focused on heavy metals, and development of remediation methods for contaminated solids and waste water.

• Dr. Holger Gulyas


Dr. Holger Gulyas is a lecturer in the Institute Wastewater Management and Water Protection. His research is focused in characterisation of organic compounds in treatment plant effluents, elimination of "Residual COD" and investigation of modern wastewater treatment processes as potential elements of ecological sanitation concepts.

• Dr.-Ing. habil. Klaus Johannsen


He is Chief Engineer in Institute Water Resources and Water Supply. His research deals with copper corrosion in household installation.



• Dr-Ing.habil Ina Körner


Dr.-Ing. habil Ina Körner is lecturer in the Institute Environmental Technology and Energy Economics. She is head of the research group Bioconversion and emission reduction. Her focus of research deals with biomass, bio energy and waste resources management.

• Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stephan Koester


Since March 1st, 2011 Professor Koester has been working at the Institute of Wastewater Management and Water Protection of Hamburg University of Technology. He investigates and assesses innovative approaches and technologies which may serve as contribution to a sustainable urban development. His research especially focuses on the urban water cycle - considering relevant trends such as demographic or climatic change. This includes for example the improvement of urban drainage systems, the testing of innovative wastewater treatment and reuse solutions as well as technologies for the removal of trace pollutants at urban hot spots.

• Prof. Kerstin Kuchta


Kerstin Kuchta is Professor in Waste Resources Management, Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics at the Hamburg University of Technology, TUHH. Her research focusses on resources recycling, waste treatment techniques and management systems especially for precious and rare earths metals and energy recovery. 

• Prof. Ralf Otterpohl


Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Otterpohl is head of the department Wastewater Management and Water Protection since 1998. His areas of research are Source Control Sanitation Concepts, Modelling of Wastewater Treatment Plant, Industrial Wastewater Management and Reuse of Wastewater.

• Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wilfried Schneider


Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wilfried Schneider is profesor of the institute Water Resources and Water Supply. His research deals with forecast of leachates and tide influenced aquiferical system.




• Dr. Ludwig Tent


Dr. Ludwig Tent, hydrobiologist and fisheries scientist, is an external lecturer in the Institute Wastewater Management and Water Protection.
His research focused on wastewater improvements for the Hamburg Elbe stretch, necessary ecological improvements of how to deal with contaminated sediments in the Port of Hamburg and restoration of lowland brooks. He leads the Environmental Protection Division of the Hamburg district of Wandsbek, co-operating with engaged citizens in river restoration .

• Maria Isabel Nunes


Assistant Professor at Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. With a degree in Environmental Engineering, a M.Sc. in Chemical Processes Engineering and a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering. Her research is focused in the solid waste management and the production biofuels of 2nd generation.Website.



• Carlos Borrego


Full Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Aveiro. During more nearly 30 years working on environmental problems, he is serving Portugal on a number of international scientific boards and committees (EC, NATO, ESF…), as well as national representations and evaluation panels. He was Minister of Environment (1991 to 1994), Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro (1998-2002) and presently is the President of the Department of Environment and Planning. He is also Director of the European Association for the Science of Air Pollution - EURASAP. As coordinator of the Research Group on Emissions, Modelling and Climate Change, the main interests are on environmental impact assessment, air quality numerical modelling and management, modelling of exposure to atmospheric pollutants and related human health. As Director of the Institute for Environment and Development - IDAD, the interface unit of University of Aveiro and CESAM for cooperation with the Society, develops professional consulting and project activities.



• Ana Isabel Miranda


Associate Professor at the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. With a degree in Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D. in Sciences Applied to the Environment she is currently co-coordinating the Research Group “Emissions, Modelling and Climate Change” (GEMAC), which integrates 17 researchers. Her main research interests are the air quality (particularly in urban areas), wildland forest fires, and climate change effects at the regional scale. Air quality modelling is her main working area.Website.



• Maria de Fátima Lopes Alves


Assistant Professor at Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. With a degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Master in Urban Project and a Ph.D. in Sciences Applied to the Environment she currently integrates the Research Group on Integrated Watershed Management, with 15 researchers. Her main research areas are on topics including ocean and coastal zone management and planning, strategic planning; environmental policies and laws.Website.



• Jose Figueiredo Silva


Assitant Professor at Departamento de Ambiente e Ordenamento, Universidade de Aveiro, since 1981. Has a Ph.D in Environmental Science - Water Pollution. Research interests include: Nutrient dynamics in the River Vouga basin, Aquatic vegetation and sediment management, Potencial of shrub vegetation from Portuguese forest as a biomass source.Website.



• Manuel Arlindo Amador de Matos


Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. He develops his teaching activity in Air Pollution Control Engineering, Waste Treatment and Management and Energy Conversion. His research activity interests are about (a) char reactivity in fluidized bed thermal processes,(b) instrumentation and monitoring of processes, (c) waste management thermochemical processes, (d) Life cycle analysis applied to waste management.Website.



• Myriam Lopes


Assistant Professor at the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. With a degree in Environmental Engineering, a Msc in Atmospheric Pollution and a Ph.D. in Sciences Applied to the Environment, she is currently a team member of the Research Group “Emissions, Modelling and Climate Change” (GEMAC), which integrates 17 researchers. Her main research interests are the air quality management (emissions and atmospheric modelling), air pollution and health effects and climate change impacts assessment, mitigation and adaptation. • Mário Cerqueira


Assistant Professor at the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. He has a degree in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Sciences Applied to the Environment. His research interests are in the field of environmental chemistry with a focus on air pollution, cycling of pollutants through the atmosphere and surface water quality. Website.



• Filomena Cardoso Martins


Associate Professor at the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro. With a degree in Geography and a Ph.D. in Sciences Applied to the Environment she is currently collaborator of the Research Group: Coastal Zone Planning and Management, which integrates 15 researchers. Her main research interests are:  Coastal Zone and Marine Management and Planning (specially Public Policies and Integrated Management Strategies), Land Use Changes (particularly those induced by EU funds), Citizenship and public participation as tools to achieve SD objectives, Conservation of Natural and Cultural Patrimony.

• Dr. Rainer Zahn


ICREA Research Professor at ICTA- UAB. The overarching topic of Rainer’s research is the ocean circulation and interlinking with global climate. He sits on international scientific committees and regularly is at sea with oceanographic research expeditions. Website.

• Dr. Antoni Rosell


ICREA Research Professor at ICTA, and Associate Professor, Department of Geography, UAB. He has published more than 50 papers in international journals, including Nature and Science, and has taken part in research projects worldwide, mainly in the Atlantic, Arctic and Siberia. Website.

• Dr. Graham Morthyn


His research deals with planktonic and benthic foraminifera, calcareous zooplankton / benthos that inhabit the water column and substrate, respectively, of the marine environment. His group is working in study areas from around the globe, and with diversity in both timescales and temporal resolution. Website.

• Dr. M. Rosa Rovira


Ph.D. in Business Administration. She has been a member of the management team at the ICTA (2003-07) and from 2007 she serves as Commissioner of Environmental Policy in the Rector team at UAB. Dr. Rovira researcher work has the goal of business accounting for sustainable development that embraces social, environmental and traditional accounting. Website.

• Dr. Gara Villalba


Gara holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering (MIT 1998) and a PhD at the Universtiy of Barcelona (1999). Presently, her research is focused in industrial ecology, namely: renewable energy resources, exergy analysis, material flow accounting, and urban metabolism studies. Website.

• Dr. Xavier Gabarrell


He has a B.A in Chemical Engineering , and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology (UAB, Spain). Currently he is a member of the Chemical Engineering Department (DEQ) of the UAB and deputy director of ICTA (2003-2006).
